This is the role people miss. A Therapy Animal is a friendly, well-mannered animal that visits hospitals, schools, libraries and care homes with its handler to cheer up other people. A Service Dog stands apart because it is trained to work. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a service animal is a dog individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. The task is the key. A dog that only offers comfort, without a trained task, is not a Service Dog under the ADA, no matter how much it helps.

A Support Animal helps a person with a mental or emotional condition simply by being present. No task training is required, and it does not have to be a dog. A cat, a rabbit or another common animal can qualify. The comfort it gives is the help, and that help is real even though it is quiet.

The whole point of a Support Animal is the calm it brings inside your own four walls. That is where the law protects it. A landlord cannot charge a pet fee for it, cannot apply a breed or weight rule, and cannot ask for your medical file. You are still responsible for any real damage, the same as any tenant.

This is the role that surprises people. A Therapy Animal does wonderful work, but the law treats it very differently from the other two. It is a calm, friendly animal that visits hospitals, schools, libraries and care homes with its handler. The goal is to lift the spirits of the patients, students or residents it meets. It is there for them, not for the owner's own access.

Because it works through an invitation, a Therapy Animal carries no individual public access right under the ADA and no special housing right of its own under the Fair Housing Act. That same animal has no right to walk into a grocery store or to override a no-pets lease at the handler's home. Honest copy has to say that plainly.

If you need the animal with you everywhere, that is a Service Dog question. If you need it at home, that is a Support Animal question.

The animal usually passes a temperament check and joins a registered visiting program with its handler. None of that grants the handler a personal access right. Ask who the animal works for and whether it is task trained. A Service Dog is task trained and works for its handler with public access. A Support Animal gives comfort and is protected only in housing. A Therapy Animal works for other people on visits and carries no personal right of its own.

If the animal is a dog and it is trained to perform a specific task tied to a disability, then yes, it can meet the Service Dog standard. Comfort alone does not cross that line. The trained task is what turns a companion into a Service Dog under the ADA, and our Training Plus add-on documents that work.

Both a Service Dog and a Support Animal are protected in housing as assistance animals under the Fair Housing Act, with no pet fee and no breed ban. A Therapy Animal does not get a special housing right, since it is not the resident's own assistance animal. For housing, the document you want is a Support Animal letter.

No. There is no national registry for a Service Dog, a Support Animal or a Therapy Animal, and no vest, tag or card is legally required. Staff at a business may ask only the two ADA questions about a Service Dog. What counts for the clinical roles is an honest letter from a Licensed Clinical Doctor.

A cat can be a Support Animal in housing, since that role is open to common animals. A cat cannot be a Service Dog, because the ADA limits service animals to dogs. Some therapy programs do welcome cats and other gentle animals as visiting Therapy Animals, but that still grants no personal access right.

For a Support Animal or a Service Dog letter, a Licensed Clinical Doctor reviews your situation and decides if a disability-related need is present. If it is, that need is documented in an honest letter. If it is not, you are told plainly and not charged for a letter you do not qualify for. A Therapy Animal does not need this letter at all.
